We had the pleasure of visiting Newfoundland for the first time and had some time for a roadtrip across the island. A couple weeks is nowhere near enough time to see much of the place but we were able to sample some of the popular areas including Gros Morne National Park, the Bonavista Peninsula and the St. Johns area.

East Coast Trail

The east coast trail stretches most of the length of the island north of St. Johns and south all along the east coast. We picked a section that featured a hike to a stunning sea arch.

Heading across the island now it was a hot day so we started to think about somewhere to swim. Naturally, the conversation of swim holes and waterfalls came up and we found a great one along the way – Thunderbrook Falls.

Finally completing the long journey to the west coast of Newfoundland, we were greeted by breathtaking landscapes but also a lot of terrible weather. This didn’t stop a journey to the top of Gros Morne mountain and Tablelands in the rain and fog.

The Bonavista Peninsula ended up being a huge highlight – jagged coastlines, puffin sanctuaries and picturesque, colourful communities. The area around Trinity was fun to explore and we stumbled upon the ruins of an old theme park.

On the way back to St. Johns we detoured into a remote area for an interesting hike up a mountain to an airplane crash site.
