Hiking up 5040 peak near Port Alberni and reserving a couple nights at the Hišimy̓awiƛ Hut (ACC Canada) is a most fantastic Vancouver Island adventure. It’s possible to hike up in the summer or tour up in the winter.
The hike is arduous and difficult but many families can complete the 4 (ish) hour journey. The effort is well worth it for the unbelievable 360 views of the surrounding mountains. A summit of 5040 peak is a straight-forward day trip from the cabin.
Overnight camping is possible beside one of the many snow melt rivers.
