The hike up Mt. Cartier is an absolute beast. Only a superhuman can summit and return in a day. The hike is a whopping 2300m of elevation gain from the valley bottom up to a final height of 2591m. The round-trip distance is 33km.

To break up hike it is possible to camp along the way or brave a night in the abandoned rundown fire lookout at the summit.

At the moment (summer 2022), the hike is officially closed due to the McKay bridge needing repair. Many choose to ignore this and hike anyway – venture at your own risk!!

Water sources are scarce higher up on the hike so it is advisable to fill up at the last stream crossing around 7km into the hike.
