Thar Peak is the smallest of a trio of peaks in the Coquihalla Summits (Yak, Nak, Thar). The names derive from Himalayan mountainous creatures. A nak is a female yak and a thar is a type of mountain goat. Each of these peaks provide a worthwhile hiking objective or can be completed in a scramble loop that traverses the three peaks.
Yak is definitely the most popular, followed by Nak. So why Thar? Who can say. For one, it makes for a fine ski touring objective, giving access to multiple great skiing routes.

Access
The most popular access point is the Falls Lake parking lot. This can become quite crowded (especially in the winter) so there is an alternate pull-off between Falls Lake and Zopkios Brake Check. It is also possible (in winter) to travel across Falls Lake and climb up the backside towards the Nak-Thar col.

The Summit
From the summit there are magnificent 360 views. Nak and Yak are right next door to the west. To the north over Zoa ridge there is a clear view of Vicuna + Guanaco (South American mountain animals now) and the Anderson River group (Gamuza, Steinbok etc..). Across the highway to the south, Jim Kelly Peak and Coquihalla Ridge are in the forefront.

Ski Options
From Thar summit there are plenty of downward routes. Two options are the ‘frontside’ towards the highway or east towards Falls Lake parking lot. Another option is to drop down to the saddle between Nak and Thar. From there routes exist off the backside towards Falls Lake or down to the highway under Nak ridge. A popular but expert route exists off the north side of Thar (Thar north couloir) but involves a couple short rappelling sections.
